Time duration calculator
Find the elapsed hours and minutes between two clock times, including an interval that crosses midnight.
Did this calculator give you what you needed?
What could be better?
Hours and minutes without decimal ambiguity
The calculator converts each clock time to minutes after midnight, subtracts the start, then converts the result back to hours and minutes.
Crossing midnight
Enable the next-day option for a shift such as 10:30 PM to 6:15 AM. Without it, an earlier end time produces a negative interval so the assumption stays visible.
A worked example
A shift from 22:30 to 06:15 with the next-day option enabled: the start is 1,350 minutes after midnight, the end is 375 minutes after the following midnight, so 375 plus 1,440 minus 1,350 gives 465 minutes, which is 7 hr 45 min.
Leave the option off and the same two times return a negative interval instead. That is deliberate. A silent correction would hide the one assumption that actually matters here, which is whether the end time belongs to the same day or the next one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my result negative?
Because the end time is earlier in the day than the start time and the next-day option is off, so the calculator is measuring backwards. For an overnight shift, tick "If the end is earlier, treat it as the next day" and the same two times return the positive interval.
Does it subtract lunch or other breaks?
No. This tool measures one continuous interval between two clock readings. To total a week of shifts with unpaid breaks taken out of each one, use the time card calculator, which has a break field per day and adds the days up for you.
What about the clocks going forward or back?
They are not applied. The calculator treats both entries as plain clock readings and subtracts one from the other, so a night that contains a daylight saving change is an hour out. In spring that night is really an hour shorter than the clock suggests, and in autumn an hour longer.
Can I enter times as 9:30 PM instead of 21:30?
The field follows your device: browsers on a system set to a 12-hour locale show an AM/PM control, and browsers on a 24-hour locale show 24-hour entry. Both produce the same underlying value. If you need to convert one written form to the other, the military time converter does exactly that.
I need the answer as a decimal, not hours and minutes.
The result is deliberately shown in hours and minutes so that 7 hr 45 min is never mistaken for 7.45 hours, a confusion worth about 18 minutes of pay per shift. When you do need the decimal form, for a timesheet or an invoice, the decimal time converter turns 7:45 into 7.75.
